Cycle 4

Welcome:

Welcome to Year 1 Coral class! I am delighted to be teaching Year 1 this year and cannot wait to see every member of our class learn lots of new things and succeed every day! We are going to have so much fun in a warm, caring and creative environment. I am so happy to be your teacher! We will also have the wonderful Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Walsh in our class to help us. They say a big warm hello and welcome too! See you soon, Mr. Bannister.

Note to parents:

Each child has been given a reading record for their reading book at home. It is important to date each day and sign your initials to let me know that your child has read with you. Reading books will be changed every Monday. By reading one book over one week, it will allow your child to become secure in their reading application.

Homework is given out on a Friday which will include literacy and numeracy. This must be handed in by the following Wednesday. It is preferred that parents read what the challenges are, with the child then completing the learning independently.

P.E. will be taught on Monday and Friday afternoons. The uniform for P.E. is: white t-shirt, black shorts, black pumps/trainers.

Subjects:

In Phonics, we will review previously taught sounds and practise these, before moving onto learning new sounds. We will apply our phonics skills to reading speed sounds, speed words and tricky words – and not forgetting our alien words! We will also focus on spelling and writing sentences.

In English, we will be reading and exploring two amazing books. The first book, ‘The Snail and the Whale’ will allow the children to sequence and retell the story. The second book, ‘Poems to perform’ will allow the children to create and perform poetry. Handwriting and spelling practise will be in the afternoons.

In Maths, we will be using our clever brains to practise lots of skills to apply in our lessons which will focus on money and time. We will be practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s every afternoon.

In Time for Reading, we will spending time together in small groups, reading a different text each week, answering questions as we focus on applying different reading skills. These small lessons will consist of one group spending time with their teacher each day.

In Science, we will be learning all about everyday materials. We will Identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. We will also find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

In History, we will be learning all about castles. As well as visiting a castle, we will learn about significant historical events and use basic historical vocabulary.

In Art, we will be learning to explore and use a variety of drawing skills! Using our learning from our history lessons as a stimulus, we will design, make and evaluate our art work – using artistic skills, terms and vocabulary.

In P.S.H.E., we will be continuing to work with Mrs. Walsh on our journey into Philosophy – asking key questions and learning how to listen to other pupils’ thoughts, and how to think in different ways. This will help our goals of building learning power.

In R.E., we will be learning about scared books, focusing on some of the stories that are used in religion and recognising some ways in which Christians, Muslims and Jewish people treat their sacred books.

In P.E., we will be having a great time learning skills in two different lessons. On Monday, we will be doing Gymnastics and on Friday, we will be doing Physical Literacy. Both of these lessons will help us to become competent and confident movers.

 

 

 

Cycle 4

The children in Nursery have worked extremely hard during Cycle 3. We have just started Cycle 4 and are excited about all of the learning that will take place.

The children have really enjoyed reading Jack and the Beanstalk.  They have even planted their own beans and taken care of them showing a good understanding of growth and changes overtime.  The children can name the roots and know that plants need the sun and water to grow.

In cycle 4 we will be reading Handa’s Surprise and I Will Never Eat a Tomato.  The children will be learning all about different fruits, ways to stay healthy and the need for variety in food.

Things to remember:

Sun cream and Sun Hats

In the summer term the children enjoy spending the majority of their time outdoors.  Please remember to ensure your child has sun cream and a sun hat in school with their name clearly labelled. We ask that you apply sun cream in the morning and we can then reapply in the afternoon.

Spare Clothes

Please ensure your child has spare clothes with them in school at all times, including underwear and socks. It is very important that we are able to change your child and make them comfortable if any toileting accidents occur or if they get wet from water play. We explore the outdoors in all weathers so children need to be dressed appropriately.

All children require a pair of wellies in school.  The children really enjoy outdoor water play and accessing the newly replenished sandpit.

Snack Money

We ask that the children continue to bring in 50p every week, on a Monday, to contribute towards the cost of providing the children with a range of healthy snacks.

Uniform
Children must be in correct school uniform at all times. This includes appropriate footwear. Please ensure your child’s uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Reading Books

Please remember to bring your child’s reading book in school every day.  Books are changed every Tuesday and we aim to try and read with each child every day.

Cycle 4

In Year 5 we want to strive to be the best in everything we do and begin to show that we are year 6 ready. After all, there are only nine school weeks left of being a Year 5 class member.

Not only do we want to create a healthy atmosphere of competition among our friends, we also want to take on personal challenges and continue to better ourselves in all areas of learning. To do this Mrs Clyne will begin to take groups in order to help us become Year 6 ready.

English Grandad’s Island

We will be reading Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies. We will be learning all about our own and others families, travel and the seaside. We will be using illustrations to infer characters’ feelings, actions and emotions. To help develop our understanding of the story setting we will be going on a trip to the seaside in New Brighton. We will also be developing our storytelling skills through ‘Helicopter Stories.’

Cycle 4

During Cycle 3, Year 5 – Kyanite worked extremely hard and have shown excellent progress in their learning already. I have been particularly impressed with the accelerated progress, which children have made in reading. We have completed a Manchester Bee project, where we have created our own stadiums, using materials of our choice and we have produced formal letters, to invite members of the royal family to our event.

Cycle 4

Wow! What a busy May we had in Year 2! Throughout May all the children did a fantastic job completing their SATS tests, they all worked so hard. Well done!

During this final half term, in English, we will be reading The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl and we will also be looking at some poetry. We will continue to do lots of role play and other activities to support our writing. Recently in English, and this will be continuing, we have been having a big focus on our handwriting. It’s important to make sure all our letters sit correctly on the line and are the correct size.

In Maths we will be covering fractions, addition, shape, measures, subtraction, statistics, multiplication and division. We will be working on using mental methods and solving calculations and problems at a quicker speed.

We have got lots of exciting topics coming up over the next learning cycle. We will be going on a trip to the Gurdwara as part of our learning in RE, looking at castles in History, learning about Aboriginal Art and researching uses of everyday materials in Science.

Homework will continue be sent home on a Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday. Please ensure children complete this as independently as possible and that it is returned to school.

Reading at home is extremely important. Children are asked daily if they have read at home and the reading records are then checked. Please try and read with your child every day and record this in his/her reading record. It is important to also question your child’s understanding of what they have read.  Books will be changed every Monday.

Please remember PE is on Thursday and Friday and your child must be in full kit every week. PE kit is; black shorts, white polo shirt and black pumps. PE on a Friday is outdoor; therefore, children are welcome to bring trainers rather than pumps for this lesson.

As the weather gets warmer over the half term lots of children will be taking jumpers and cardigans off during the day, therefore please ensure your child’s name is clearly visible in all items of clothing.

To ensure the best possible learning in school your child needs to arrive on time (8.50am) and attend school every day. We begin lessons at 8.50am therefore if your child is late, they have already missed some learning for that day. Please inform school immediately of the reason for any pupil absence.

Cycle 4

Year 3 Sapphire Class are excited to start the new topics in Cycle 4. As we move into summer, we will continue to enjoy the lighter morning and evenings and noticing the changes to our environment!

Uniform

As all children are now wearing some of the summer school uniform, could I remind you to put your child’s name in their uniform so that we are able to identify is easily. This will help reduce children’s uniform getting lost around school.

Homework

Homework is given out on a weekly basis. Children will bring home their homework on a Friday to be returned on a Wednesday. This will include a piece of maths work and some spellings that will be our focus in lessons the following week. This means children will be tested on their spellings on the Friday after they are given out. There will be a bookmark with the spellings on sent out in order to practise them at home.

 

In addition, each term there will be a topic based homework project for the children to enjoy creating with you at home.

Diary

Children have all been given a reading record book so that you are able to write in any comments after reading with your child. Reading is an essential part of your child’s learning, therefore we encourage them to read at home every night.

 

Behaviour

Throughout the school there is a traffic light system to monitor behaviour. Children will all start on green at the start of the school day. Children will receive a warning if they display unacceptable behaviour and then will move down to yellow and then red if this persists. We encourage all children to make the right choices in order to move back to green by the end of the day. If children finish the day on green, they will receive a green stamp. Children are then able to spend the amount of stamps they have earned over time. Children can spend from 10-50 stamps depending on whether they choose to save them up or spend them as they go. The children of Sapphire class have responded well to this new system!

The Always board chosen by year 3 was rabbits. Our Always rules are:

  • Work as a team
  • Be kind to other children and adults
  • Listen when others are talking
  • Use good manners
  • Try out best
  • Respect our classroom

 

House points

Children are rewarded with housepoints for good behaviour, work and following the school values. The winning house is announced in celebration assemblies on Fridays. The winning house receives 5 minutes extra break time on a Friday.

 

P.E.

We will do PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Children will need to bring a PE kit consisting of white top, black shorts and pumps or trainers. Our Wednesday PE slot is outside, therefore you may wish to send in additional clothing in case of rain.
