Summer Term – Cycle 4

The children in Reception have worked extremely hard during Cycle 3. We have just started Cycle 4 and are excited about all of the learning that will take place.

Reading

  • Reception’s Key Texts this cycle are No Dinner! by Jessica Souhami and On Sudden Hill by Linda Sarah.
  • It has been great to see some parents staying to read with their child first thing on Wednesday mornings. We would love to see more of you though. Please come and spend some time choosing and reading books with your child, in class and on the library bus.
  • Reading at home

Please continue to listen to your child read their reading book every night. Ask your child questions about their book to check their understanding of what they have read. Please help them to practise the highlighted words on the sheet at the front, every night.

Writing
We are continuing to work hard in RWI lessons to segment and blend to read and write words and short sentences.

Maths

In Maths, some children are working very hard on adding and subtracting by counting on or back, using their head and fingers. Some children are also learning how to double and halve numbers.

Focus children

Each week we have six ‘focus children’ in Reception. If your child is a focus child then you will receive a letter the Friday before, informing you of this. If possible we would like you to take a few photographs of what you and your child do over that weekend and email them to our Early Years account. The teachers will print out the photos and talk to your child about what they have been doing. We will then file these photos into their files.

Please email to:

brentnall.earlyyears@salford.gov.uk

Chicks

During this cycle we will be having some special visitors in Reception. We will be receiving a set of eggs which we will be able to see hatch into chicks. Very exciting! The children will learn about the life cycle of a chicken and will have the opportunity to draw and write about the chicks and maybe even hold a chick!

Snack Money
We ask that the children continue to bring in 50p every week, on a Monday, to contribute towards the cost of providing the children with a range of healthy snacks.

Attendance

Please be reminded that the school doors open at 8:50am and maths lessons commence at 9am prompt.  It is important your child arrives to school on time to ensure valuable learning is not missed.

Weather

Please ensure your child has spare clothes and underwear as there may be times when your child gets wet during outdoor play.  As the weather is getting warmer we would appreciate your child coming to school with sun cream already applied so they are able to learn in the outdoors immediately. A sun hat and spare sun cream which can be kept in school with your child’s name on is also recommended.

Clothing

Please ensure all clothing is labelled clearly with your child’s name. We are still noticing a number of jumpers and cardigans with no name.

Autumn Term Update

The children have had a fabulous time learning about Transport over the past few weeks. They have learnt lots about transport on the ground, in the air and on water, including pirates and space travel. The children really enjoyed the visit we had from the local fire brigade when they got a chance to squirt water from the hose.

picture1picture2

The children have made some fantastic models at home of different types of transport. We displayed them in class and the children told everyone what they had made.

Our new topic

This term in Reception our topic is ‘Special books’. We will be doing lots of work based on The Stick Man story and then The Christmas Story. After Christmas we will be listening to and reading Traditional Tales, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs.

Writing

We are working very hard in RWI learning to recognise sounds, segment and blend to read words and write sounds.

Maths

In Maths we are working very hard on being able to count objects to 20 and recognise numbers up to 20. Some of the children have been learning about 1 more and 1 less. We have also been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Homework

Your child will continue to bring homework home every Friday. Please try and complete the homework over the weekend and bring it back to school on Monday. It is important to sit with your child and support their learning. However please let your child complete the homework using their own ideas and sounding out words themselves, using their own spellings.

Please continue to listen to your child read their reading book every night plus help them to practise the highlighted words on the sheet at the front, every night.

Snack Money
We ask that the children bring in 50p every week, on a Monday, to contribute towards the cost of providing the children with a range of healthy snacks.

Welcome to Reception

Welcome to Reception class! We hope that everyone has had a lovely Summer. The staff that will be working in Reception this year are:

Miss Wills – Class teacher

Miss Livesey – Class teacher

Miss Froggatt – Early Years leader

Mrs Singh – teaching assistant

Miss Preston – teaching assistant

Miss Savage – 1:1 teaching assistant

What we learn

In Reception we work towards the children reaching the Early Learning Goal at the end of the year. The Early Learning Goal is found in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and we will work within this framework to support your child’s learning and development throughout the year. In reception class children learn through play, therefore the children spend most of their day in continuous provision where staff observe the children and support their child-initiated play in order for children to achieve their next steps. Throughout the day the children will also take part in adult-led group activities; communication and language, phonics and maths.

The Early Years Foundation Stage framework contains seven areas of learning, each having a number of statements, which staff use in order to track your child’s learning and development.

There are three prime areas of learning;

  • Communication and Language- This covers speaking, understanding and listening and attention.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development- This covers managing feelings and behaviour, making relationships and self-confidence and self-awareness.
  • Physical Development-This covers health and self-care and moving and handling.

And four specific areas of learning;

  • Literacy-This covers reading and writing.
  • Mathematics-This covers number and shape, space and measure.
  • Understanding the World-This covers technology, the world and people and communities.
  • Exploring using Media and Materials- This covers exploring using media and materials and being imaginative.

Our topic for this half term begins with getting to know reception including learning the rules and routines. We then move on to learning about special people and places followed by transport.

Always Rules

In Reception class we have four rules which we encourage the children to follow at all times. Once a week we sit with the children to see who is following our rules. There are four steps for the children to take in order to receive their Always badge. The Always badges are presented by the head teacher and are for the children to wear to school every day!

  • Always have kind hands
  • Always have kind feet
  • Always have a kind mouth
  • Always follow the high five rules

Reminders

  • The children in reception are able to enjoy our outdoor area in all weathers, therefore as the weather changes throughout the Autumn term please ensure your child has appropriate clothing in school for all weathers; including hats, gloves and wellies when appropriate.
  • Please ensure your child has their reading book in school every day with a comment in their yellow reading record about their reading at home. Your child’s class teacher will read with your child at least once a week and change their book regularly.
  • We aim to offer a range of snack options for the children, therefore we ask for a voluntary contribution of 50p per week to enable us to buy this. Please give this to your child’s class teacher every Monday.
  • If you would like to join orbit please ask your child’s teacher for a consent slip and we can invite you to join online. All you need is an email address! This is a lovely way for you to see comments and pictures about what your child is learning in school.
