Welcome to Year 1 Coral class! I am delighted to be teaching Year 1 this year and cannot wait to see every member of our class learn lots of new things and succeed every day! We are going to have so much fun in a warm, caring and creative environment. I am so happy to be your teacher! We will also have the wonderful Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Walsh in our class to help us. Note to parents:
Each child has been given a reading record for their reading book at home. It is important to date each day and sign your initials to let me know that your child has read with you. Reading books will be changed every Monday. By reading one book over one week, it will allow your child to become secure in their reading application.
Homework is given out on a Friday which will include literacy and numeracy. This must be handed in by the following Wednesday. It is preferred that parents read what the challenges are, with the child then completing the learning independently.
P.E. will be taught on Monday and Friday afternoons. The uniform for P.E. is: white t-shirt, black shorts, black pumps/trainers.
In Phonics, we will review previously taught sounds and practise these, before moving onto learning new sounds. We will apply our phonics skills to reading speed sounds, speed words and tricky words – and not forgetting our alien words! We will also focus on spelling and writing sentences.
In English, we will be reading and exploring two amazing books. The first book, ‘The Robot and the Bluebird will allow the children to sequence and retell a story set in a fantasy world. The second book, ‘The Snail and the Whale’ will allow the children to create a recount. Handwriting and spelling practise will be at the beginning of each lesson.
In Maths, we will be using our clever brains to practise lots of skills to apply in our lessons which will focus first on addition and subtraction and revisiting place value and using higher number. We will be practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s every afternoon.
In Time for Reading, we will spending time together in small groups, reading a different text each week, answering questions as we focus on applying different reading skills. These small lessons will consist of one group spending time with their teacher each day.
In Science, we will be learning all about plants. We will observe and record our very own planted beans and describe how they grow. Then we will find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.
In Geography, we will be learning all about Australia. We will name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans and understand geographical similarities and differences. Then we will be using world maps, atlases and globes to identify the country and surrounding oceans.
In Art, we will be learning to design and create our very own aboriginal paintings as well as a digeridoo! Using our learning from our Geography lessons, we will design, make and evaluate our art work – using artistic skills, terms and vocabulary.
In P.S.H.E., we will be continuing to work with Mrs. Walsh on our journey into Philosophy – asking key questions and learning how to listen to other pupils’ thoughts, and how to think in different ways. This will help our goals of building learning power.
In R.E., we will be learning about Jewish people and their beliefs, focusing on important and special items found in a Jewish house. Then we will learn about important and sacred activities undertaken throughout the week and year.
In P.E., we will be having a great time learning skills in two different lessons. On Monday, we will be doing Gymnastics and on Friday, we will be doing Physical Literacy. Both of these lessons will help us to become competent and confident movers.
