Welcome back to a new term at Brentnall. We hope that everyone has had a lovely break. We would like to welcome your child to Year 2. The staff that will be working in Year 2 this year are:
Miss Gilmore – Class teacher
Miss Morreal – Support teacher
Mrs Richardson – Teaching assistant
Mrs Roberts – Teaching assistant
We are all looking forward to teaching the children in Year 2. We believe that, with your support, your child will make excellent progress.
As Year 2 children will sit their SATs tests towards the end of the school year, we will be teaching children the knowledge and strategies they need to be equipped for the tests, as well as encouraging them to be independent, organised learners. Although SATs can sound scary, we ensure turn this time is enjoyable and celebrates what children have achieved throughout the year.
To ensure the best possible progress in Year 2, your child needs to attend school every day and arrive on time each day. We want to lead the battle for Team 2 to win the attendance award and we can only do this with your help. It would be great to get 100%! This year, the class which has the best attendance will receive a treat at the end of the year. Please inform school immediately of the reason for any pupil absence.
We have a traffic light system and an ‘Always’ system to monitor behaviour. All children showing expected behaviour are on green. Children who demonstrate unacceptable behaviour will move to amber and then red if this persists. The sanction for moving down is to miss playtime. Children need to follow their class ‘Always’ rules to move up the class chart weekly and they gain their ‘Always’ badge if they consistently follow these rules.
Excellent behaviour is rewarded with house points, within Year 2, the team with the most amount of house points at the end of the week receive a treat from the treasure chest! As well as this, house points are recorded weekly in assembly and the team with the most amount of house points at the end of each term will receive a treat. Children can receive house points for behaviours such as good manners, being helpful, following the ‘Always’ rules and trying their best.
Homework will be given on a Friday:
- A topic piece of homework – can be completed over 8 weeks.
- Spellings – to be practised each week, for our spelling test.
- Times table practise – to be practised each week, for our times table challenge.
- Maths homework – to be completed weekly.
Please encourage your child to complete their homework carefully and neatly, offering help and support when needed.
Homework needs to come back to school on a Wednesday.
Please listen to your child read their book every night and write a small comment in their reading records. It is important to question your child’s understanding of what they have read. Pupils who practise their reading regularly at home tend to make the most significant progress.
Reading books need to come to school every day with a small comment in the reading records.
PE lessons are on Thursdays and Fridays. We suggest your child brings their kit in at the beginning of term and leaves it in school until the end of term, to ensure that they do not forget it.
It is expected that by the end of Year 2 pupils know, recite and understand the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables. We will cover this in class but please practise at home as well.
