Welcome !

Welcome back to a new year at Brentnall; I hope that everyone has had a lovely break. I would like to welcome your child to Year 5 – Kyanite.

Your Year 5 teacher this year is Miss Gilmore.

Everybody is looking very smart in their new uniforms; we ask that children’s names can be written in all uniform items, to ensure no uniform is lost throughout the year.

Attendance/ Punctuality:

To ensure the best possible progress in Year 5, your child needs to attend school every day and arrive on time each day. We want to lead the battle for Team 5 to win the attendance award and we can only do this with your help; it would be great to receive 100%. Please inform school immediately of the reason for any pupil absence.

We have a traffic light system and an ‘Always’ system to monitor behaviour. All children showing expected behaviour are on green. Children who demonstrate unacceptable behaviour will move to amber and then red if this persists. The sanction for moving down is to miss playtime. Children need to follow their class ‘Always’ rules to move up the class chart weekly and they will be rewarded with an ‘Always’ badge if they consistently follow these rules.

Year 5 – Kyanite have designed their own ‘Always’ rules to follow:

  1. Always be respectful and use our manners.
  2. Always be determined to succeed.
  3. Always be honest and truthful.
  4. Always work as a team.
  5. Always have a positive attitude.
  6. Always have fun and enjoy learning.

House System:

Excellent behaviour is rewarded with house points; the winning team is then announced during Friday’s Celebration Assembly. Children can receive house points for behaviours such as using good manners, being helpful, following the ‘Always’ rules and trying their best.

This year homework will be sent out on a Friday and should be returned to school on a Wednesday. Each week, homework will include a piece of maths and a set of spellings that will be tested on a Friday.

Every child in Year 5 has been provided with a school diary, this should be taken home every night along with a reading book that has been chosen by your child. The diary is to be signed and returned the next day, to show your child has read at home (15-20 minutes). Children who fail to complete their homework, will have to complete during lunchtime.

PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We suggest your child brings their kit in at the beginning of the week, to ensure that they do not forget it, and take it home on a Friday to be washed.

Times Tables:

It is important for your child to be secure in applying their times table knowledge. Therefore, it is crucial that your child is practising times table skills at home. This year, your child will be able to access a times table scheme, called Times Table Rockstars; your child will be given a log in and can practise online at home.
